It's not much to look at now but it works! Its a working room! I haven't got any display set up yet, besides 2 dollies- Gilda and Holly, but its a work in progress (money money ;)
It feels so good to separate my work/home life, as fellow home based business owners understand. I can be at home at relax! Today is my first official work day there... Very excited. Not sure what to wear ;) so used to staying in my PJs.

I'm seeing a new production company Monday, so today I'm concentrating on getting organized for this sample run. Lots of paperwork and trade drawings. Little bit of sewing for samples and orders to finish.
This is my first post using my iPhone. So not sure how to upload images. But above is a pic of a little visitor...

Voyeur, Byron’s Fashion Expose’, is back on Friday 30 September. The event will showcase 12 local designers and will entertain and inspire fashion enthusiasts.

Expect the catwalk to shine with an eclectic mix of ‘Byron Boho’, 1930’s inspired lingerie, chic dresses, and contemporary mens clothing. Prizes will be awarded on the night to Voyeur 2011 Designer of the year, outfit of the night and the face of Voyeur.

The doors will open at 6:30pm, with the catwalk show starting at 7:30pm. The champagne will once again flow, as will the entertainment. Look forward to a night of captivating performances and not to mention the wit and sass of MC Mae Wilde.

Last year’s show sold out well before the event, so get your tickets early!

Back Stage at 'Out of the Box"

We did it! And it was gorgeous.. or so I heard. I haven't seen any footage yet, and I was backstage for the whole event, but I got some fantastic feed back and everything was positive. I cant say it was easy.. or I was calm and organized (I am a creative type.. nothing I do is organized or calm ;) but my team was fantastic I am so grateful and proud of our work.

I haven't got images just yet from the parade, cept this little pic of me with the models and I regretfully didnt get a chance to snap away because it was Hectic! BTW I am on tippy toes here! What a way to look short and round by standing next to these ladies! ha!

I can't wait to show you my new slips... Long, lady like numbers! I will keep you intrigued... wont be long..

Lights.. Music .. Glamour!

So much joy researching music for the show. I have picked out a selection of songs for the sound tech to merge for me.. and I love them so much it is hard to pick only 3! I only have 7 minutes of time to fill.. so that is about 2 songs.. but I am going to try cutting up 3 of the songs. Above are a couple of my favorites.. I love Edith Piaf.. this song is so grand and full of emotion. I have her 'best of' and I love it up loud while I am designing.. it inspires me.. gets my creative juices flowing... I could draw up elegant long slips all day every day listening to her voice sing in french.....

Out of the Box fASHION sHOW

My very first Fashion Show August 13th Byron Bay.

I am very excited to put on a little show and I am having so much fun with all the details and of course just like me, throwing in last minute designs! I swear it is when I do my best work. All the excitement gets to me when I am inspired and I just overflow with ideas. Luckily I have a lovely friend who is helping me with the stage performance.. organizing and choreographing the models, and gives extra time to be such a creative chaos.
The show will be a little fashion.. a little cabaret! Curious? I will keep you posted! And of course post the video footage.

So the next week and a half will be spent sewing up a storm... I am really enjoying the process. It is such a dream to be working full time on my label.. I never want to go back to work! But bills still need to be paid. Mouths fed.. blah blah ;)

Small goals: sew up all the pieces for the show, exercise every morning even if it walking down and up my driveway (it is steep), take my vitamins and drink more water, pay my bills, enjoy the winter sunshine and breathe slowly! Oh and also stop and kiss my girls at least 3 times a day :)

I have used super soft 100% organic cotton jersey and detailed the set with a silk chiffon frill and velvet ribbon. Shown here in Aubergine with Pistaco trim, but will be also available in Natural with Royal Purple trim and Black with Pistacio trim

The Making of a Prom Queen...

Here is a dress I made up for my niece last month. I love it when I am asked to make a dress for a special occasion in someones life, especially someone who is close to me. I feel like I am part of something very special in their life. My gorgeous niece, Pia, had found a image of a dress she loved in a magazine and wanted me to make it for her formal this year. The patterns and sewing took me 2 days to put together, yes... 2 long days.. but it was so worth it to see Pia so happy.

I started with the concept Pia sent me. It was similar to a ballerina style dress- Satin boned bodice and a full tutu tulle skirt. My niece lives in Brisbane (2 hours away from me) so I needed to make most of the dress without her to fit until the end (a lot of trust there!!) Once I had her measurements, I drafted up a pattern and sewed the bodice which was cobalt blue satin with a satin lining in black.

After the bodice I whipped up the skirt. It was made from fine tulle with the black satin lining. It had over 5 meters of tulle for this little skirt! I tested it on the dummy for fit and length before I put the zipper in. Lastly it was fitted on Pia.. and WaaaLaaaa....

Packaging... to pack or not to pack

Who doesn't love a pretty packet? A beautifully designed product is just made even more beautiful with the way it is presented. Sometimes I just buy products because the box or packaging is so gorgeous, and then I never want to throw them away..

So my mission for this week is packaging ideas for my lingerie range. When I was planing my business and deciding on how I would merchandise and package my designs, being sustainable and environmentally friendly were the up most priority and if possible I wanted it to be able to be re-used... to have a 2nd life after my pieces were out of the box, and not become more landfill.

Ideas I had were...

Lingerie bags made from PET (fabric made from recycled plastic bottles). You can get a net like fabric that would be perfect to protect and wash my lovely items in... Firstly I thought the lingerie wash bags seemed like a ingenious idea, but I couldn't yet source the Pet fabric, and not in the small quantities I would order at this stage of my business. All the eco synthetic fabric bags/packaging on the market was ugly, ya know... the 'Green Bag' fabric. It just doesn't say gorgeous luxurious lingerie.

Next I thought of a drawstring fabric bag made from the left over scraps from manufacturing ... made of the same fabric the garment is made from and that can be reused to protect your lingerie when traveling, or just in your drawer. I asked my garment manufacture to use any fabric off-cuts from my designs to make the bags. But the cutters are so good at using all the fabric, especially because the knickers patterns are so small and you can lay the cutting so close, and therefore... pretty much nil wastage. I am using this idea, but I am not getting the amount of bags that I need for each garment.

I have always been hesitant about boxes, unless I can source them made from recycled cardboard, and be printed with soya inks. I would love to have some gift boxes for the customers that might want to give eco intimates as a gift... to themselves, or a special loved one. They can be re-used later keep your keepsakes in.

Then there is the most environmentally one of all...no packaging at all...

But you have to sent the item off in something right? and isn't there nothing more exciting then the surprise of opening a parcel and finding your purchase.. or gift, encased, hidden and ready for only you to open. It is the packaging makes a simple purchase feel like a gift.

So I am researching... high and low.. and it is easy to find inspiration. Here are some gorgeous products with as gorgeous packaging that I am getting inspired by...

My Stall at The Finders Keepers Market in Brisbane

I tooks some pics of my stall at Brisbane's Finders Keepers. Sorry about the bad quality.. I am not sure what happened there... Thank you so much to all the lovely patrons that purchased my intimates.. I am so happy to see how much they were loved. It was so exciting to finally get to show off pieces, after such a dramtic and bumpy ride to get to this point. But it is all worth it when you see woman pick up your heart and soul designs... and ooohh and ahhhh. That, my friends, is what it is all about.
There was so many talented designers there. I made some lovely new friends (B&M, roger and peach, Sarah Rothe), saw some amazing talent from all over the country and I cant wait to get out there, and meet you all again... customers, and designers...

Designer Markets- The Finders Keepers

The gorgeous Finders Keepers Markets are happening again, Melbourne on 9th and 10th October, Brisbane the 6th and 7th of November and 3rd and 4th of December in Sydney. This is the cream of the crop of Australian Young Artists and Designers. From print makers, to jewelery, clothing, ceramics... a human creates in by hand... it's there! Eco Intimates will hopefully have a stall at the Brisbane dates. I will let you know how to find me there closer to the date. There is cafe/bar, live music and a festival atmosphere. Yay! Celebration of Talent!

New Stock Arriving

I havent fallen off the face of the earth, just been busy busy with my sale rep job... selling other designers clothes!! Yes yes, must get mine out there too. I do have gorgeous new stock coming in over the next few weeks, but I wont get a chance to photograph it till next week. I will hopefully be at the young designers market at Southbak in Brisbane next month, and then the Finders Keepers later in November. Just waiting on my application :) wish me luck.
It's been a long journey getting my designs manufactured... I have learnt so much in the grueling process. But hopefully I will sell it all over the next couple of months, and I can start the process all over again with wiser head on moi!!

I just read this on a strangers facebook page.... but I love it so much I have to put it out there

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there...to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be, but when you lock eyes with them, you know that very moment that they will affect your life in some profound way.

And sometimes things happen to you at the time that may seem horrible, painful and unfair, but in reflection you realize that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential, strength, will power or heart. Everything Happens For A Reason Nothing happens by chance or by means of good luck. Illness injury, love, lost moments of true greatness, and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul.

Without these small tests life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere. Safe and comfortable but dull and utterly pointless. The people you meet affect your life..... The successes and downfalls that you experience can create who you are, and the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones. If someone hurts you, betrays you or breaks your heart, forgive them because they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart to.

If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you but because they are teaching you to love and open your heart and eyes to little things. Make every day count. Appreciate every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can, for you may never be able to experience it again.

Talk to people you have never talked to before, and actually listen. Let yourself fall in love, break free and set your sights high. Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don't believe in yourself, no one else will believe in you. Create your own life and then go out and live it

A little Vest for my Autumn wardrobe

I have been playing around with a new line of day wear, separate from my intimates range. Just a few little pieces to add to my wardrobe really :) but i will list them up on etsy if anyone else wants one. I am in love with vests at the moment. I wear a men's style one by Barkins that I found at my fav 2nd hand store all the time. So i have styled this one a little different, using the organic cotton jersey, so it is a soft loose style with hemp silk frill feature on the pockets. I wear it over a little singlet and jeans. It is photographed here in Slate but it comes in black and aubergine also. I recently went on a sales trip to North Qld to assist my Agent- Taboo Fashion Agency. This is my first road trip in such a long time, it was such a lot of fun and being a NSW gal myself, it was lovely to experience how gorgeous Qld is. We drove from Sunshine Coast to Cairns in 4 days, Staying in Bargara, Yepoon, Proserpine then Cairns. Luckily weather and luck :) was on our side as we were nervous about the cyclone Ului that was due to hit Proserpine the day after we arrived there. So we drove straight to cairns the next day and I managed to fly back home from Cairns. I was anxious to get back because i had to get back to make the dress for divine rock-star Dallas. Here are a few of my favorite images from the trip. What a beautiful country we live in :)

Gorgeous singer Dallas Frasca asked me to design and make her a frock for the 2010 MusicOz Awards last Friday. She was nominated and won 2010 Artist of the Year and 2010 Blues and Roots Artist of the Year!! I am so in awe and proud of her, she is a amazing and inspiring woman. I feel honered that i got to make the frock she won the awards in.

The dress was made from a vintage 50's dress I had found and kept the full circle dress becasue of the mass of gorgeous bright blue fabric in it. The dress was tiny and needed to be tranformed. I designed a flattering halter style dress with full skirt for Dallas, added 3 layers of tule tutu skirts in purple and black and hey presto! a superstar!

A little inside info on my range today :) as i am getting ready to show the collection to boutiques for summer.

All the samples are ready (relief) and production booked in, and the real work of getting orders is now in front of me. I have been emailing and calling, and next week I show the range with my agency in Byron Bay, Brisbane and a road trip from there to nth Qld. Yes up to Cairns.

I have four stories in the Vintage Allure Collection, Lucy, Brooke, Stella and Vivian, each range I used the organic cotton lace I have imported from Europe. The lace is antique style in natural unbleached state.

Along with the lace I have used a luxurious hemp/silk satin, which I have pleated and tucked, detailing inspired by lingerie from the 1920s and 30s. I collect vintage nightwear and lingerie and I wanted to translate and immortalise the detailing of these beautiful pieces in my own designs, in my own way.

Peoples talent just blows me away and I must admit a little green part of me cries, but a big part of me wants to scream "Oh my god that is divine". Today I got a comment from Mady Dooijes about my own designs, yet when I checked out this ladies own blog I did the above mentioned scream. I came across this great little site called Little Green Guide while browsing around the world wide web for Australian eco blogs to read. Alot of the eco blogs I read are not Australian, so it doesn't help me much when the products they recommend and the government policies they refer to are international. This site is written by Australians for Australians (they welcome any non Australians too) so I feel at home here and understand the references! ;)

I apologise to my blog pals for being a bad blogger. I was finding it challenging to keep it going. I had such a busy schedule because of setting up my pattern making /fashion design business, and all I could think about was all the boring decisions and organising i was doing and I didn't think you wanted to hear about that! For the past 6 weeks I did a certificate in small business management and had to write a business plan for the next 2 years of my business venture! It ended up being a book! 60+ pages, half a inch think!!! I was overwhelmed with the information I had to come up with. All those financial tables and projections!!!!!!!!!!!!
But it is done now and I can get on with running the business and getting orders made.
As you may have noticed, I still have no catalog for the latest range!!! It unfortunately keeps getting held off while I design and sample my customers designs (gotta put food on the table first right!)
I had listed some of the range on etsy and soon made it. I hope to raise some funds to buy the pretty satin labels for the size, washing instructions and cute woven logo tags with my little birdy.

I had a birthday last week and I was spoilt by my beautiful friends and family. One of my favorite pressies was the Jamie Beattie clutch my sister gave me. Jamie Beattie sure knows what a gal loves, and my sis sure knows how to please me! I saw Jamie's collection at the Brisbane Young Designers Market last June and my sister must have caught me drooling over the maxi clutches. I took it out for birthday drinks on the weekend and I must say it looked fab. Jamie makes custom designs so you can have a one that match your favorite outfit. Since I have so many favs I am sure this is just the first of many :0)

Byron Bay Designers Part 7.. Eco Intimates

I hope it isn't too forward of me to do the last Byron Bay Designers on myself. I am just so excited about my new range coming out I thought I would give you a sneak little preview of whats about to come. I have finally finished designing the organic cotton jersey 15 piece range and now preparing for the photo shoot with my gorgeous muse/model Brook Chamberlain. The snaps above are from a fitting we had yesterday in my freezing work room, poor Brook was shivering in my little cotton numbers.

Before I jump into my first production run I want to get some production advice to not only make sure they are sewn perfect as possible, but can to be sewn easily and efficiently. So I have arranged to meet with a designer friend to pick her brain about the best way of sewing each piece.

Byron Bay Designers Part 6- Rachel Stone

When I first fell in love this Artist, it wasn't her paintings, but her jewelery that beguiled me. I work at little jewelery store in the seaside town Brunswick Heads, and a few years back we bought some of Rachel Stone's delightful little gemstone pieces for the shop. I quickly snapped up a pair of her earrings (6 faceted carnelian clustered together) and a necklace of pinks, oranges and yellows coloured gems. When I get my camera back I will post a picky of the lovely pieces.

But it wasn't till last year that I came across her paintings, and I cant say which I love more. At the exhibition of her 'Tiny Feathers' collection I missed out on the one I wanted (I really must remember the early bird gets the worm ;). I couldn't find a image of it, just as well because it would have taunted me. Here are my next favorites. The sugary jewel like one above called "Fairywrenland diptych part II" I love, and if I can afford it I would barter off the new owner. But honestly if I could I would get all 3.

These two ladies have their heads and heart in the right place... their mission? dECOrating with style

Lately I’ve been on the lookout for furnishings to add to my home. 6 months ago I moved to a lovely big Queenslander with dark wood panelling, original floral detailing on the ceilings and a funky old fire place. I have taken my time in deciding how to decorate. Being a rental I’m limited to the furnishings but besides the old carpet (probably was once a light beige) it’s in fairly good spape.
So I have set myself a eco challenge of decorating with low impact, recycled or preloved furnishings. Besides the pieces I have already purchased ( :0 I went recently to ikea) I will continue decorating with eco style. So I will post updates to my challenge as it unfolds.
I love 2nd hand furniture which suits the style of this century old house. Not only because its recycling, but because there is so many treasures out there with so much more pleasure to give. I have collected various pieces now, but I need to bring it all together with the decoration of pictures, lamps cushions ect.. Those little extras that make the place look homely.

I just found the perfect cushions for my futon lounge/day bed. Marina Cavalieri has some beautiful prints on 100% organic cotton/linen blend fabric. Marina's work is intricate and organic with an art deco flavour. My first purchase will be her namesake cushions in red. I can see them scattered on my choc brown covered daybed complementing some huge raspberry red cushions.

Reducing my carbon footprint

One of my business goals is to have very little impact on the environment. The most environmentally friendly fashion is recycled, creating fashion from waste. But is it possible for a new fashion range to be eco friendly?
Here are some of the ways my product is so far...
-I use environmentally safe and low impact textiles like organic cottons, hemp, soya fibres or bamboo.
-I switched to green power that uses renewable green energy resources like wind, solar or water -I use where possible Australian made textiles and local manufactures to reduce carbon in transit
-I try to minimise packaging by designing reusable product bags from fabric wastage
-My business cards and swing tags are printed on recycled paper
-I email invoices and orders instead of fax or print
-I have PDF look books
But I use energy in nearly everything I do, from ordering fabric to making garments and getting them to the retailer. And until I have an own solar and wind energised factory, and hybrid car :) How can I offset this energy I use? One way is to find out our carbon footprint, go carbon neutral, and carbon offset, 'Yeah yeah I know' you say.. or 'What the?' Well if it’s the latter. I've googled and discovered. Here is some explanation from the Carbon Reduction Institute website:

A Carbon Footp rint is the total amount of Carbon Dioxide(CO2) and other Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emitted over the full life cycle of a product or service or in a financial year for a business. A Carbon Footprint is usually expressed as kilograms of CO2 equivalents, which accounts for the different global warming effects of different Greenhouse Gases

Carbon neutral means that you have calculated and accounted for all of your carbon climate change impact; you have investigated reducing your carbon footprint and you also purchase carbon credits to offset your unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions.

Carbon offsetting is a mechanism whereby individuals pay a third party to reduce the same amount of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere that they have added to it. Carbon offsetting is achieved through tree plantations, which absorb the amount of carbon emitted; buying energy from renewable sources that don’t emit CO2, and energy efficiency projects that reduce energy usage and hence the emissions associated with energy usage.

Greenfleet is the first not-for-profit forestry offset organisation to become an Approved Abatement Provider under the Federal Government’s Greenhouse Friendly™ initiative. Investment in Greenfleet projects generating approved Greenhouse Friendly™ offsets will make a real difference in the fight against climate change.

Carbon Neutral are they are a non for profit organisation who have planet around 30 million trees in the past 30 years. For only $19 per tonne or around $3 per tree, Carbon Neutral will help you to offset your carbon dioxide emissions by planting native trees on your behalf.
